Becoming YouTube – created by me, Benjamin Cook, writer, filmmaker, YouTuber, man – is a documentary series about YouTube and YouTubers, incorporating fantasy elements and sketch comedy.
The inaugural episode was uploaded to my YouTube channel, youtube.com/ninebrassmonkeys, in December 2012. Since then, the series has attracted over five million views and been acclaimed all over the place. Which is nice. The Observer newspaper described me as "the official chronicler of Britain's YouTube generation”. GQ called me "a YouTube sensation".
As well as being discussed in the national press, Becoming YouTube has been featured on Sky News, the BBC’s Woman’s Hour, BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz's Radio 4 series Zeitgeisters, award-winning historian Bettany Hughes’ BBC radio series The Ideas That Make Us, and RTÉ's YouTube Superstars, amongst other shows. BBC Two’s The Culture Show devoted a chunk of its episode about YouTubing to me and my YouTube channel, including a behind-the-scenes report from the set of Becoming YouTube. Becoming YouTube Ep 1 was selected to close the BFI's Future Film Festival 2013.
Series One comprised 12 "weekly" episodes (I've embedded Ep 12 on this page); Series Two (trailer also below) is currently in the works. It’ll be with you very soon. I promise.
